Mentorship, generally speaking, is a personal development relationship in which an older more experienced person helps to guide a younger less experienced person. It is more than just answering questions or providing support and encouragement.
Mentoring is an ongoing relationship of learning, dialog, and challenge. The main responsibility of the mentor is the welfare of the young person and to help ease the transition to adulthood through a mix of guidance, support, and challenge and to help him/her think through things.
At the same time it is extremely important that the young person being mentored shows respect, openness to learn, and directly communicate and consult especially before major decisions. Without respect and direct honest communications the mentorship relationship cannot exist.
